  1. The French Revolution of 1789 resulted in the removal of the monarchy and
  2. the establishment of the First Republic in 1792. Napoleon ruled the First
  3. Empire from 1804 until 1814. Following its restoration in 1814 the monarchy
  4. was once again deposed. Then the Second Empire was followed by the Third
  5. Republic which endured from 1870 until 1940 when Germany occupied France.
  6. After the war the Fourth Republic lasted until 1958 when the Fifth Republic
  7. was established and a new constitution.
